Request from Birmingham Local 117 President Don Baker
Posted
On: Jul 23, 2010 (16:05:29)
Our Deputy Chief Richard Brasfield has been an IAFF member for 36 years. His granddaughter Olivia Dearman is a beautiful 14 year old who was diagnosed in June of 2007 with an extremely rare bone tumor (Desmoplastic Fibroma). Since the discovery of the tumor, Olivia has undergone four major surgeries in Birmingham and the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. The surgeries required removal of a large portion of bone, including the jawbone and teeth, on the left side of her face. Reconstructive surgery was conducted in November, 2009 and she now faces yet another reconstructive surgery followed by implant surgery to replace her teeth. The insurance company has covered all the surgeries thus far but has denied coverage for the implant surgery. Olivia's parents are now facing surgical and hospital costs in excess of $60,000.00 A fund has been established to meet these ever rising costs. If anyone could, and would like to contribute, please send donations to:
"Olivia Smiles"
Westmont Baptist Church C/O Brenda Brasfield
P.O. Box 757
Pleasant Grove, AL 35127
Thank You,
Don Baker

Help Cullman Brothers
Updated
On: Apr 27, 2010 (12:51:00)
Cullman Local 2644 is requesting that no qualified, especially union brother/sister apply for any part-time positions should/when they become available in Cullman. Cullman has gotten word that the "powers that be" are going to go forward with a plan to use "reserves" or part-timers in Cullman. This will cut out all overtime and kelly day pay and for some result in a 20% pay cut. They are also being threatened with losing holiday pay and other things. Make no mistake, they are in a fight for their livelihood, as we all may be in these uncertain economic times. I have assured them that we, as their brothers and sisters, stand ready to assist them in whatever way we can. I realize that there are several locals in the state that have part-timers in their departments and that might work for them, but Cullman is requesting that other fire fighters do not apply for these positions should/when they become available. Don't take money out of your brothers pockets.
Thanks,
Kat
